The ancient sulphur mine of Urbino, which functioned for a century giving work to over five hundred miners, has been cleverly reconverted and transformed under the careful and expert eye of Professor Egiziano Piersantini, into a marvellous fusion of art and nature. The underground smelting furnaces have become art laboratories, projection rooms and a library; the outer structure, buildings and work areas have been turned into reception areas, restaurants and sports facilities.
The awareness of the need to restore the structure was the beginning of an extraordinary metamorphosis born of the artistic mind of the Urbino Professor, a teacher at the art lyceum in Varese and founder of the renown Lithobottega (lithography lab) often often by many great contemporary painters including Guttuso, Sassu, Fiume and Cascella. All the noteworthy features of the original mine have been highlighted by exceptional restructuring work and by the latter establishment of an Arts Centre unique in its formula and resulting in the birth of La Corte della Miniera (The Mine Court)
