Nature and Sea
SAN BARTOLO PARK
The Mount San Bartolo Regional Nature Park, marks the start of the
coastal hill system of central Italy, immediately following on from the
well known tourist destinations of the Northern Adriatic.
This protected area has some very impressive natural aspects: the broom
that flowers in May gives incomparable fragrances and colourful
displays set against the blue-green of the crystal waters of the coast;
the pebbled coast that often forms just a thin strip beneath the
vertical cliff faces.
As well as its natural beauty the Monte San Bartolo Park features a
sizeable quantity of archaeological and historical artefacts, ranging
from Neolithic finds in the Monte Castellaro area, to the mosaics of
the III/IV Century AD, which are being unearthed at Colombarone, along
the old Via Flaminia; from the lost ports of Roman origin at Santa
Marina and Vallugola.

MOUNT CONERO
A visit to the Mount Conero Park, with its countless panoramas, with
its colours that change with the seasons, is an incomparable attraction
able to convey strong emotions to any visitor.
In particular the Park offers a vast range of opportunities to
experience fully the relationship with nature, as well as the history
and traditions of the place.
Set up in 1987 in almost 6,000 hectares of territory, it is a coastal
park offering varied and breathtaking surroundings. Within its
boundaries, overlooking the sea, we find Mount Conero, the most
important geological and naturalistic highpoint of the mid Adriatic.
Its slopes are mostly covered in ‘Macchia Mediterranea’, or scrubland,
while the northern part contains vast pinewoods. The landscape is
littered with historical and artistic features ranging from ancient
rock engravings to roman caves, from Benedictine and Franciscan
monasteries to defensive structures such as the Napoleonic Fort and the
Clementina tower and Portonovo.

THE FURLO GORGE
The Furlo Gorge is situated in an environmentally protected area: a
reserve for certain species of flora and fauna, it represents an
extraordinary example of nature which human intervention has managed to
modify without spoiling it.
After cutting through the rock formations of Mounts Paganuccio and
Pietralata, the waters of the river are channelled through wooded areas
and vertical rock faces to supply a hydroelectric power station. There
are many interesting plant species on the tops of the Furlo mountains:
the local Ferns and Orchid together with perennial herbaceous plants,
including the very rare Moheringia.
The slopes exposed to most warmth are covered in holm oaks, quercus pubescens, hornbeams, Etruscan honeysuckle and arbutus.
The presence of birds which are already becoming extinct elsewhere is
also significant: the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the eagle
owl, the blue rock thrush and the nuthatch.
Neither is it uncommon to encounter squirrels, roe deer and fallow deer.

FRASASSI CAVES
Genga, a small municipality in the province of Ancona, extends its territory over impressive highland panoramas, at the foot of the Marche Apennines. Here in its vast confines can be found the Frasassi Gorge eroded by the river Sentino, of exceptional landscape and natural interest; it contains numerous caves, which at various times have brought to light finds from Prehistoric life: Grotta del Buco Cattivo, Grotta del Mezzogiorno, Grotta dei Baffoni, Grotta Bella and Grotta del Fiume. Here in this gorge is where we find the famous Frasassi caves and the ‘Grotta del Santuario’.

THE SEA
The Marche coastline looks out over the Adriatic sea and is punctuated by promontories, inlets and small coves.
Long sections of the Northern coast are of strong visual impact with a very wild appearance.
From the mouth of the river Tavollo to that of the Cesano, runs the
Pesaro coastline, known as the "Riviera delle Colline" (literally
‘Riviera of the hills’). In the north we find Gabicce Mare, a seaside
resort arranged on two levels: below, stretching out over the small
gulf with a large sandy shore set among hotels and gardens, higher up,
a panoramic hillside covered in vegetation.
Pesaro, the attractive city that resounds the music of the great Gioacchino Rossini, offers 7 Km. of spacious sandy beaches.
Senigallia, with its 12 Km. of white and fine sandy beaches and its
ancient origins (it was Sena Gallica, the ancient capital of the Gauls).
The regular layout of the beaches is suddenly interrupted to the South
of Ancona where the greenery of Mount Conero overlooks the Adriatic
Sea.
