In an old disused sulphur mine, today converted into an art and nature workshop, we can learn and become familiar with craft techniques: Lithography Workshop: illustration of the various techniques of the various lithographic procedures and presentation of materials used Copperplate Engraving Workshop: introduction to the technique, historical notes, presentation of materials.Screen Printing Workshop: known to the Chinese for many centuries and used to pattern fabrics, silk screen printing was developed in Europe from the mid 1800s.
Ceramic Workshop: illustration of the technique and the materials used, first firing and terracotta, majolica and porcelain Herbalist workshop: introduction and historical notes on the use of medicinal plants, recognition of spontaneous flora, gathering in the wild and study of medicinal properties
Herbal medicine
Introduction and historical outline of the use of officinal plants. Identification of native plants and their specific characteristics. Picking plants directly in the field and drying them. Study of the medicinal properties of the plants picked and their classification. Explanation of herbal medicine concepts, the dichotomous key, Linnaean and other classifications and the binomial nomenclature. Preparation of herbal teas and decoctions for the final realisation of medicinal preparations. Explanation of the differences between herbal teas, decoctions, poultices and syrups. Test of the participants regarding the notions learnt by picking the plants in the field. Conclusions and discussions on the work carried out. N.B. An illustration of the techniques and the materials used; white and coloured clay, first firing and terracotta, majolica and porcelain, glazing, oxides, moulding by hand and lathe. Illustration of plaster cast, second firing and third firing at low temperatures for gold, silver and metallic polishes. Preparation of a sketch and realisation of the same using the chosen technique. Firing. Printouts, historical outlines and comparison with the work of artists from the past.
Serigraphy
Serigraphy has been used by the Chinese for many centuries to decorate fabric but became popular in Europe towards the mid-nineteenth century. Its great versatility (it is possible to print on all kinds of support including paper, fabric, wood, etc.) and simplicity of use mean it is preferred to other more laborious techniques, both by artists and in industry. The course includes the explanation of techniques, the presentation of various materials and the execution of the work; sketch, transfer to acetate, gelling, laying on the contact printer, frame stripping, drying, correction, preparation of the colour and finally, printing on paper or fabric (t-shirt provided by the Corte della Miniera).Lithography

Illustration of the techniques of the various lithographic processes and presentation of the materials; plates, pencils, crayons, etc. Intervention of the participants on the material. Use of pencils, lithographic ink, spraying using masks, addition of leaves, fabrics and other organic materials in the design. Work using a lithographic press and preparation of the stencils for printing. Any corrections and variations to the colour. Printing. Discussion of the printouts with experts and comparison with the work of artists from the past.
Chalcography
Introduction to the techniques, historical outlines, presentation of the materials; plates, gravers, dry points, rabbles, burnishers, polishes, etc. Illustration of the following procedures: scouring using chalk powder, varnishing, smoking, mordanting and bevelling of the edges. Execution of the work by the participants with the help of the expert. Procedures of rapid varnish coverage, first and second mordanting, washing and bevelling of the edges and use of the chalcographic press for stencil printing. Discussion and printouts.
