It is a rare thing for a territory to be able to offer such a wide variety of food and wine. The most impressive offering is that of the savoury truffle found in the fairs at Sant'Agata Feltria, Sant'Angelo in Vado and Acqualagna. Acqualagna holds the distinction of being the truffle capital all year round.Along with truffles, large quantities of mushrooms of all varieties are also found along the whole length of the Appenines.
On the borders with Romagna, at Talamello, the famous Formaggio di Fossa’ is produced, in the ditches left by the Malatesta dynasty. Another type of cheese has conquered noble palates: the Caciotta di Urbino, adored by Michelangelo.
The Extra virgin olive oil produced in the oil mills is of excellent quality, it comes from the areas of Cartoceto, Piagge and Corinaldo. Fish is an everyday experience, this and other products of the territory are the basis for a simple and flavoursome cuisine but above all one of exceptional variety.
As regards the wines, there are Sangiovese and Bianchello, the later being cited in tradition as as the cause of the defeat of Asdrubale with the Romans in the famous battle of the river Metauro. The Vernaccia from Pergola and the Red Burgundy (brought by Napoleon’s armies) and replanted along the fantastic coastal backbone of the San Bartolo Park.
