Nature and Sea: The Furlo Gorge
The Furlo Gorge is situated in an environmentally protected area: a reserve for certain species of flora and fauna, it represents an extraordinary example of nature which human intervention has managed to modify without spoiling it.After cutting through the rock formations of Mounts Paganuccio and Pietralata, the waters of the river are channelled through wooded areas and vertical rock faces to supply a hydroelectric power station. There are many interesting plant species on the tops of the Furlo mountains: the local Ferns and Orchid together with perennial herbaceous plants, including the very rare Moheringia.
The slopes exposed to most warmth are covered in holm oaks, quercus pubescens, hornbeams, Etruscan honeysuckle and arbutus.
The presence of birds which are already becoming extinct elsewhere is also significant: the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the eagle owl, the blue rock thrush and the nuthatch.
Neither is it uncommon to encounter squirrels, roe deer and fallow deer.
